Building a Business with a new Pet in tow

Welcoming a pet into your life can bring instant joy and fulfillment. But when you’re also trying to start or grow your small business, the challenges that come with a new pet tend to amplify.
So, how do you succeed at both of the jobs ahead of you?
The Aussie Lambs have some tips for how you can use available resources and make a plan for building your business while taking care of your new furry family member:

Figure Out What to Outsource

No matter the type of business you’re starting, you’ll be hard-pressed to do everything on your own. Not only will outsourcing certain tasks increase the productivity and efficiency of your business, but it will also help you avoid becoming overwhelmed and burned out. Moreover, it will leave you more time to focus on running your company and caring for your pet. Think of any jobs that you either lack the expertise for or detest doing, and find qualified professionals to handle them.

You can find reputable freelancers via job boards like Upwork for a wide variety of tasks and projects. For example, a virtual assistant could take care of all your menial everyday responsibilities like fielding phone calls, responding to emails, and invoicing clients. A graphic designer could help you create eye-catching online marketing materials. A web designer could help you produce a killer business website. All you have to do is post your requirements on the job board and connect with potential candidates. Furthermore, working with freelancers is very cost-effective. For instance, a web designer will typically charge $15 to $30 an hour.

Incorporate Business Tech

Along with hiring freelancers, look into the various technologies that can help you run your business efficiently. There are plenty of communication, project management, time tracking, and financial management apps and tools on the market. Do your research, and invest in anything that will save you time and help you move your business forward.

Look to Smart Pet Gadgets

The same goes for your pet: there’s plenty of tech that can improve your pet’s life and free up more time for you two to spend together. For example, there are GPS collars, fitness robots, health trackers, automatic feeders, pet doors, and pet cameras that will integrate with your mobile device for easy operation.

Establish Your Pet’s Space

One of the most important steps in welcoming your pet into their new home is to carve them out their own living space. If you’re going to be working throughout most of the day, it might be ideal to set them up in a spot in or near your office. Make sure they have a comfortable bed, blankets, toys, and access to food and water.

Develop a Routine

Routine is critical for pets, so you’ll want to establish a routine as soon as possible for your new pet. This includes feeding times, potty times, playtimes, walks, and any other activities that your pet will be engaging in on a daily basis. Try to remain as consistent as possible with your pet’s routine, and take advantage of these moments to spend quality time together.

Find a Sitter

Finally, you never know when you’ll need a helping hand with your pet. If you take business trips or a well deserved holiday then you could benefit from hiring a pet sitter to take care of your pet while you’re away. The Aussie Lambs have many years of experience with providing top-notch pet sitting services, and would love to care for your pet!

It’s no easy task to build a business. And it’s definitely no easy task to build a business while simultaneously welcoming a new pet into your home. Consider the tips above as you navigate the challenges, and you and your pet both will thrive in the season ahead!

Our Golden Anniversary of house sits

December 2015 – our first house sit for 6 cats in Thailand

We’ve found the saying “time flies when you’re having fun” to be so true. Since our first house sit in Thailand in December 2015 the time has just flown by. We’ve travelled all over the globe from Australia to Asia to Europe to the Middle East to North America and enjoyed so many memorable homes, home owners and most importantly – pets.

We didn’t realise until just recently that in August 2019 we completed our 50th house sit!

When we embarked on our house sitting journey I don’t think we had any idea how exciting and fulfilling our life would become. We’ve loved meeting so many amazing people – be they home owners, other travellers or fellow house sitters, and forming wonderful new friendships.

Caring for a pair of orphan Lambs

In February 2019 we accepted a 2 week house sit in Hampshire, England caring for sheep and pigs on a small rural holding. The sit would be in April and we were told that even though it would be lambing season there would be no additional responsibilities. The sheep would look after themselves and their lambs however prior to arrival things had changed.

House Sitting in Mexico (part 2)

We did a total of 6 house sits during our 5 months in Mexico (Oct 2018 – March 2019). Our previous post “House Sitting in Mexico part 1” covered our first three sits so this post will cover the other three we did in Puerto Vallarta, Patzcuaro and San Miguel de Allende.

Puerto Vallarta – Bubba and Carlye

Puerto Vallarta (also known as PV) is located on the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of Mexico. The climate here is generally very hot and humid however January (when we were there) is the best time to visit as the temperatures are always in the 20’s (Celsius) and the humidity decreases.

Having spent the previous 2½ months inland (at an elevation of 5,000ft) in the Lake Chapala area where the temperatures are lower and ‘chilly’ overnight, it was pleasing to experience warm days and evenings.

Getting into the “spirit” of the Day of the Dead celebrations

Colourful festivals, music and horses ridden down the main street are just a few of our fondest memories of Mexico.  We spent 5 months there (Oct 2018 – March 2019) and during that time we completed six house sits and cared for 9 dogs, 4 cats and a herd of goats. The pets ranged in age from 5 months to 19 years. Like children, it’s hard to pick a favourite, we loved them all equally.

We sat in a variety of locations –  which allowed us to experience many, but not all, of the different cultures that make up Mexico.

Fun with Freddie

Here we are house sitting in a town called March (in the United Kingdom) which is a silly name because it makes you think of the month March and not a town.

Nevertheless we are looking after a beautiful, fluffy Samoyed called Freddie. Our time here is only nine days but long enough to explore this pretty town and nearby Peterborough which is a historical city with a beautiful cathedral.

Cookie – a gorgeous wee Jug

We stayed on in Edinburgh for a 2nd house sit during July looking after the delightful, and tiny, ‘Cookie’. She is a 4 year old JUG  (Jack Russell x Pug) and a tiny girl that has her bed set-up at the front window.

She’s an excellent guard dog as anyone who walks up to the front door will get the ‘full force’ of her barking and for a little dog she makes a lot of noise – she particularly dislikes the postman!

Edinburgh – back to our second home

We lived in Edinburgh for 8 years back in the nineties and noughties and were very excited when we secured two house sits in our old ‘home’ town. The first sit was a little unusual as the house sit was divided between two sets of sitters. We were getting a handover from the first sitter and not the home owner. It all worked fine however and there were no problems.

Our home for this 7 day sit was a lovely two storey home with it’s own private backyard, only a short walk from where we used to live in Edinburgh.

Valencia – a favourite place in Spain

Sky enjoying a chin rub

This was our second visit to Valencia, Spain. We had visited in 2016 and fallen in love with this beautiful Spanish city and vowed to return one day.

As it happened, when we saw a house sit posted on House Sit Match in Valencia we quickly applied. We were extremely happy to have been selected to care for Skye and Bella, two lovely beagles.

Laid back in Mount Martha, Melbourne

Our sit in Mount Martha was the only one we did during our stint in Australia that wasn’t for friends.

It was also ‘different’ for us because we met the homeowners, Rose and Cassie, in person at their home in Mount Martha before the sit. It was just after we arrived in Australia in February but our house sit for them wasn’t until April. We discussed the requirements of the sit and care for the animals and were given a set of house keys. This was the first, and only time, we saw Rose and Cassie as they were departing early in the morning on the day of our arrival. They were also returning home after we had left the property. We kept in regular contact and provided updates and photos during their 8-day break via WhatsApp. Continue reading “Laid back in Mount Martha, Melbourne”

An excitable duo – Marlie and Annie

Marlie (L) and Annie (R)

On this sit we found ourselves looking after two tiny Jack Russells for three weeks for a friend we have known for over 20 years.

These ‘two girls’ have a very different personality from the dogs at our previous sit.

When we arrived at Andrew’s house, Marlie was excited and nervous at the same time. She spent at least five minutes barking at us while making up her mind whether or not she liked us. Thankfully she decided she ‘liked us’ and we became very good friends.

Bailey and Sam

Sam and Bailey enjoying the beach

We spent 2 months house sitting in Australia starting in February 2018. It was great to be ‘home’ to see friends and family again after being away for almost a year. However, it did feel ‘odd’ house sitting close to where we used to live as we had previously only house sat in locations outside of Australia.

We secured 4 house sits for our time in Australia. Three of them were for friends, which was fantastic. Besides already knowing the ‘home owners’ it enabled us to spend  additional time with them as we hadn’t seen them for several years.

Morning walk in the park with Lilly and Mindy

This is our first house sit in our home country, Australia, and we are sitting for long-time friends from Skye, just 20 minutes from our home town, for 11 days while they are away on a cruise.

We have been house sitting overseas and this arrangement to sit for Margaret and Peter was a commitment we made before we left on our travels two years ago .

Sitting in Singapore

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We were delighted to be house sitting in Singapore and, in a first for us, our only pet was a Betta fish (more commonly known as a Siamese Fighting Fish). We spent our time in a lovely 2 bedroom apartment complex with a pool not far from the city centre. In fact, Singapore is so small and compact, with great public transport, that you are never too far away from anything.

Jack & Scooby

This is our 3rd visit to Chiang Mai, Thailand but our first house sit in this city looking after 2 cats Jack & Scooby. The home owners are ex-pats from Queensland and have made Thailand their new home and we were delighted when they asked us to care for their precious fur babies while they returned to Australia for 2 weeks.

Our new fur baby – Ollie

Here we are again, returning to a house sit in the Costa Brava region of Spain. Last year we cared for Alfie (cat), but he sadly passed away just a few weeks prior to our arrival. Our home owners, have a new pet, Oliver (Ollie), a gorgeous 11 month old Shih Tzu. A puppy they purchased 9 months ago, so Ollie is a ‘new addition’ for us.

Three Days With TOSH

IMG_20170701_174222318

We had another short break between sits in late June, so we headed to Bedfordshire to care for Tosh, an adorable 8 year old Welsh Terrier, while his mum and dad went away on a Fiat Barchetta car club weekend.

Tosh was a sweet, gentle, friendly dog with a few peculiar habits.

3 days in Cambridge with Huxley

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Between our house sits in France and Bramshill in the UK we had 4 days to fill in.

We normally use these ‘gaps’ as an opportunity to have a break from house sitting and have a ‘proper’ holiday. We were keen to go back and visit Cambridge, a lovely university town on the River Cam that we had briefly visited in 2016 when house sitting in Berkhamsted.

We booked flights to Stansted Airport, which is the closest airport to Cambridge, but before booking accommodation, decided to wait and see if a house sit might come up in Cambridge that fitted our dates. As luck would have it one did and the dates were perfect.

Provence, France – two cats (and their many friends!)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Sommieres, Provence

Provence in France is a very beautiful area and we were excited about this house sitting location.

Our home owner collected us from Marseilles Airport, while his wife, Marolijn was at home cooking us a scrumptious meal.  A delicious start to this house sitting assignment.

Their pet cats, Lola and Pedro, were not as excited to meet us, especially Pedro who ran away at the sight of us.

Two cats, a dog and 86 million olive trees

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here we are in the Andalusian region of Southern Spain for 3 weeks.

Olive trees stretch for miles and miles around. Our home owners, retired English couple, David & Sylvia tell us there are 86 million trees in this region and is the highest producer of Olive Oil in Spain. In fact this area alone produces 75% of Spain’s olive oil.

This lovely renovated Spanish home with views overlooking, you guessed it, olive trees is our new home for the next 3 weeks.

Volunteering at a Thailand Dog Shelter

WVS photo of Jac

“Saving one dog won’t change the world but surely, the world will change for that one dog”.

This is the motto for the Hang Dong Dog Rescue Centre near Chiang Mai, Thailand and on our second visit to Chiang Mai I spent some time volunteering at the Dog Centre where I was able to walk and  socialise with these rescued dogs. It was truly an enjoyable and rewarding experience for me. So many beautiful dogs just wanting to be loved and waiting to be adopted.
