Edinburgh – back to our second home

We lived in Edinburgh for 8 years back in the nineties and noughties and were very excited when we secured two house sits in our old ‘home’ town. The first sit was a little unusual as the house sit was divided between two sets of sitters. We were getting a handover from the first sitter and not the home owner. It all worked fine however and there were no problems.

Our home for this 7 day sit was a lovely two storey home with it’s own private backyard, only a short walk from where we used to live in Edinburgh.

Laid back in Mount Martha, Melbourne

Our sit in Mount Martha was the only one we did during our stint in Australia that wasn’t for friends.

It was also ‘different’ for us because we met the homeowners, Rose and Cassie, in person at their home in Mount Martha before the sit. It was just after we arrived in Australia in February but our house sit for them wasn’t until April. We discussed the requirements of the sit and care for the animals and were given a set of house keys. This was the first, and only time, we saw Rose and Cassie as they were departing early in the morning on the day of our arrival. They were also returning home after we had left the property. We kept in regular contact and provided updates and photos during their 8-day break via WhatsApp. Continue reading “Laid back in Mount Martha, Melbourne”

An excitable duo – Marlie and Annie

On this sit we found ourselves looking after two tiny Jack Russells for three weeks for a friend we have known for over 20 years.

These ‘two girls’ have a very different personality from the dogs at our previous sit.

When we arrived at Andrew’s house, Marlie was excited and nervous at the same time. She spent at least five minutes barking at us while making up her mind whether or not she liked us. Thankfully she decided she ‘liked us’ and we became very good friends.

Bailey and Sam

We spent 2 months house sitting in Australia starting in February 2018. It was great to be ‘home’ to see friends and family again after being away for almost a year. However, it did feel ‘odd’ house sitting close to where we used to live as we had previously only house sat in locations outside of Australia.

We secured 4 house sits for our time in Australia. Three of them were for friends, which was fantastic. Besides already knowing the ‘home owners’ it enabled us to spend  additional time with them as we hadn’t seen them for several years.

Morning walk in the park with Lilly and Mindy

This is our first house sit in our home country, Australia, and we are sitting for long-time friends from Skye, just 20 minutes from our home town, for 11 days while they are away on a cruise.

We have been house sitting overseas and this arrangement to sit for Margaret and Peter was a commitment we made before we left on our travels two years ago .

Sitting in Singapore

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We were delighted to be house sitting in Singapore and, in a first for us, our only pet was a Betta fish (more commonly known as a Siamese Fighting Fish). We spent our time in a lovely 2 bedroom apartment complex with a pool not far from the city centre. In fact, Singapore is so small and compact, with great public transport, that you are never too far away from anything.

Jack & Scooby

This is our 3rd visit to Chiang Mai, Thailand but our first house sit in this city looking after 2 cats Jack & Scooby. The home owners are ex-pats from Queensland and have made Thailand their new home and we were delighted when they asked us to care for their precious fur babies while they returned to Australia for 2 weeks.

Fun with Ollie

Our new fur baby – Ollie

Here we are again, returning to a house sit in the Costa Brava region of Spain. Last year we cared for Alfie (cat), but he sadly passed away just a few weeks prior to our arrival. Our home owners, have a new pet, Oliver (Ollie), a gorgeous 11 month old Shih Tzu. A puppy they purchased 9 months ago, so Ollie is a ‘new addition’ for us.

July saw us in Widdington, not far from Cambridge, in another beautiful, wee village in Essex. This village has no shops, but it does have a local hall, bus stop and a pub which was only 3 doors down from us.

3 days in Cambridge with Huxley

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Between our house sits in France and Bramshill in the UK we had 4 days to fill in.

We normally use these ‘gaps’ as an opportunity to have a break from house sitting and have a ‘proper’ holiday. We were keen to go back and visit Cambridge, a lovely university town on the River Cam that we had briefly visited in 2016 when house sitting in Berkhamsted.

We booked flights to Stansted Airport, which is the closest airport to Cambridge, but before booking accommodation, decided to wait and see if a house sit might come up in Cambridge that fitted our dates. As luck would have it one did and the dates were perfect.

Two cats, a dog and 86 million olive trees

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Here we are in the Andalusian region of Southern Spain for 3 weeks.

Olive trees stretch for miles and miles around. Our home owners, retired English couple, David & Sylvia tell us there are 86 million trees in this region and is the highest producer of Olive Oil in Spain. In fact this area alone produces 75% of Spain’s olive oil.

This lovely renovated Spanish home with views overlooking, you guessed it, olive trees is our new home for the next 3 weeks.

The Serenity of Riogordo

This is Frank

You may remember Frank from one of last year’s posts.

We couldn’t resist returning to see Frank and his beautiful ‘mum’ Rose.

This lovely home nestled in the hills and amongst the olive and almond trees is so charming and peaceful, we love coming here.
